Sir - Charlie Cleverley (Report, February 1) is living in a bygone age, I fear. As a recent article in The Church Times makes clear 'the English are no longer C of E by default', so it seems unlikely that any rector can now claim a privileged position to define what is and what isn't permissible in our country.
That said, there are deeper issues here, because St Aldate's cannot presume to speak for Anglicans in Oxford as a whole, especially at a time when there is so much division within the Church of England. We are currently witnessing a distressing situation at one of our local theological colleges, Wycliffe Hall, with divisions between erstwhile colleagues.
Christians in Oxford need to get along with each other as well as with those of other faiths. Fortunately (as you reported earlier) the Bishop of Oxford has shown himself to be welcoming to the Muslims' request for a prayer call. Let's back the bishop!
