Here we look at photos from the Oxford Mail archive from 31 years ago in 1992.

It was a year when a Banbury print works caught fire, and visitors to the Westgate Centre including City of Oxford Silver Band and some fundraising clowns.

A massive blaze engulfed the Altovar print works building in March 1992.

More than 100 firefighters tackled the inferno which at one point threatened a neighbouring petrol depot and a large tank of solvent thinner.

A huge column of smoke and flames could be seen for miles as the blaze took hold of printing works, a former furniture store in Station Approach.

Fifteen people were evacuated amid fears that the building would collapse, but in the end no one was injured.

One eyewitness said they saw slates on the roof “pop like gunfire” during the blaze.
