Nothing lasts forever and that’s certainly the case with Oxford pubs.

Here we feature some popular pubs that have closed over the years.

One of the city's historic pubs - The Grapes in George Street - shut suddenly at the end of 2021 but could now reopen within months after a London-based pub company stepped in to take it over.

Drinkers were shocked when staff at The West Berkshire Brewery pub in George Street placed a note on the door to say it would not be reopening in 2022. 

The note told drinkers: “It is with great sadness that I inform you The Grapes is closed. We will not be reopening.”

The West Berkshire Brewery, near Newbury, which took over the pub lease in 2019, went into administration, according to Companies House.

It is not the only well-known pub in the city to have closed in recent years.

The Mitre in High Street shut in 2019 for a major refurbishment of Lincoln College student accommodation above the bar.

But the pub never reopened, and became a branch of Italian restaurant chain Gusto.

The Mitre is thought to be the city's oldest pub and drinkers have criticised the move.

The Eagle and Child in St Giles also remains closed.

But is not all doom and gloom with an announcement expected soon on the future of the pub.

Owners St John's College said efforts are being made to reopen the pub and the process of identifying new management to run it is about to be completed.

The college asked property management company to identify the most suitable tenant.
