The Pokémon Trading Card Game was first published in Japan in 1996, quickly becoming a hit with youngster who would trade the cards and battle their Pokémon with each other.

As of March 2021, the game has sold over 34.1 billion cards worldwide.

The record for the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold stands at more than $5 million.

  • An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the most expensive Pokémon card was sold in 1999 for $350,100. It has been brought to our attention that, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, Logan Paul now holds the record after a Pokémon trade worth $5.275 million in 2021. We are happy to clarify this and apologise for any confusion the previous inaccuracy may have caused.
