We are delighted that the initiative by Oxford's Green councillors to site up to three large wind turbines on council-owned land on the edge of the city - first reported in the Oxford Mail in 2006 - is moving forward (Oxford Mail, January 30).
But why has it taken so long for the Liberal Democrat administration to act?
And why make such a fuss now when approaching local elections where they are sure to lose control of the council?
Interviewed on November 13, 2006, Green councillor Matt Sellwood confidently predicted that the turbines would be in place "before 2011".
To make this happen will require cross-party working.
I hope that the Lib Dems remain as enthusiastic about these turbines after the elections and that they will work with us to persuade the nuclear-loving Labour group to back their installation.
Despite initial Lib Dem and Conservative opposition, Oxfordshire's first wind farm at Watchfield is now under construction.
But, if the worst effects of climate change are to be averted, we need more examples like this and Oxford City must play its part.
