THE fire service has warned the public to make sure they have working smoke alarms, after a detector saved a householder's life in a devastating blaze.
Fire gutted the kitchen of a house in Bletchingdon, near Bicester, earlier this morning.
Crews from Kidlington Fire Station and Rewley Road Fire Station arrived on the scene and were faced with what they described as a well developed fire in the kitchen at the back of the property.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus and a high pressure hose to put the flames out.
The home had working fire alarms which alerted the owner to the situation and gave them valuable time to escape and call the fire service.
Photographs taken at the scene of the incident show the kitchen devastated by the fire.
Extensive damage can be seen throughout the kitchen, with insulation hanging from the ceiling, the cupboards and work surface blackened and the oven door fallen off.
There is also damage to a window, which has been left blackened and distorted following the blaze.

Incident commander Dave Horle said: "Working smoke alarms have saved a life and the quick actions of closing doors have saved the property from further damage by fire and smoke".
A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue added: "Smoke alarms are the best and easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you and your family precious time to escape."
