Prince Charles met students from under-represented backgrounds at Oxford university today for a discussion about the challenges they’ve faced.

His Royal Highness was welcomed to University College by Baroness Valerie Amos, the first Black head of an Oxford college, at her residence on the college grounds.

The Prince visited to have a discussion with students about Opportunity Oxford, a programme to support offer-holders from underrepresented backgrounds for their undergraduate careers.

The programme is based on an initiative started at University College in 2016 and supported by its alumni.

His Royal Highness, the Baroness and 12 students who are recipients of the Amos Bursary, for young students of African and Caribbean heritage from challenging environments, as well as Opportunity Oxford students sat for 30-minute discussion.

Baroness Amos said: “Oxford has changed over the years, we now have a number of programmes which are really helping people to diversify the university and make it much more inclusive."

Kwabena Osei, 20, who is a recipient of the Amos Bursary and studying history and politics said: “I didn't even think of trying to apply for Oxford until I found about about this bursary from a family friend.

"I told Prince Charles about my journey at Oxford and he asked about my mum, who is from Ghana.

"It would have been great to have more time to chat to him but I was grateful that he came to listen to us."

AS IT HAPPENED: Oxford visited by Prince Charles

Naroa Ibarra-Aizpura, 24, who is the Vice President of the MCR at University College Oxford who was one of the students who welcomed Prince Charles to the college described him as ‘really funny and nice’.

On leaving, Prince Charles addressed students who had gathered outside to see him off asking jovially "have we stopped you going somewhere".

As part of the royal visit, Prince Charles also opened a new building at Trinity College.
