Discount chain store Poundland has revealed if it will reopen a store in Oxford city centre.

On April 28, the Oxford Mail asked readers what shops they would like to come to the city, with several people saying they wanted to see a Disney Store, Build-A-Bear and LEGO Store open branches here in Oxford.

Alongside these brands, people were keen to see a Poundland open back up.

The last Poundland in Oxford disappeared with the old Westgate Centre when it was revamped six years ago.

In 2018, some less well-off residents said the Westgate has displaced budget shops from Oxford’s centre, leaving them with little choice but to venture elsewhere.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: “We've been working hard over the last couple of years to transform what we offer in our stores...from frozen food to clothing and homewares, true to our promise of amazing value.

“We're pleased people in Oxford know this - and many will remember the value we used to offer in our old store.

“We were sadly displaced from our previous location and we've been looking to return to Oxford ever since.

“While we have no current plans to open a store in the centre of Oxford,  if the right location became available we would certainly consider it.

“In the meantime our stores in Cowley, Dicot, Witney and Abingdon are open to serve Oxford customers.”
