If you are out and about in Jericho this weekend with friends and family, here are some option for watering holes to visit. 

If you are starting out in the city centre, make your way to the Worcester Street junction with Walton Street, and then start to stroll the length of Walton Street.

Once you have walked to the other end of the street - past Oxford University Press and beyond, towards Branca restaurant, and the Phoenix Picturehouse, you can start thinking about a beer.

And you won’t have to go far - there are at least half a dozen pubs within walking distance of each other.

Jude The Obscure, the Jericho Tavern, and The Victoria pubs are all quite close together in Walton Street.

And then if you start to explore the back streets, walking towards the Oxford Canal you will find other hostelries to offer you a warm welcome.

The Harcourt Arms is in Cranham Terrace, The Rickety Press in Cranham Street, and The Old Bookbinders Ale House is in Victor Street.

Foodies love The Old Bookbinders, while The Harcourt Arms is popular with drinkers who like some outdoor space.

There has been good news for drinkers who are regulars at Jude The Obscure, as it has just had a six-figure makeover from pub company Greene King.

Named after the famous Thomas Hardy novel, the hostelry has had a complete interior redesign, bringing a fresh new look.

The pub now has an all-new interior décor, with a teal and green colour palette throughout.

Not only that, the pub has a new bar and has upgraded its drinks menu, including beers from local craft breweries White Horse and Siren, alongside its popular house brew Obscurity.

Outside, guests can relax with new furniture and planters providing a pleasant atmosphere for an evening drink with friends or family.

The pub is now ‘heated and dog-friendly’, according to Greene King.

General manager Timothy Bailey said earlier: “Jude The Obscure has always been a popular Oxford pub, and the whole team are thrilled to invite back our regulars and new customers so they can enjoy everything our new setting has to offer.”

The pub’s website says: “Situated in the heart of Jericho. Just a stroll from the famous spires of Oxford you will find Jude the Obscure, a traditional British pub with award-winning bar and kitchen.

“We have a beautiful heated and dog-friendly beer garden (with TVs).

“The pub itself has a very welcoming atmosphere where you will always feel at home.”

If you still haven’t had enough walking and drinking, head along Walton Well Road, and across Port Meadow until you reach The Perch in Binsey, where you can while away some time inside, or in its large garden.
