An Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue vehicle is leading a convoy taking equipment and cuddle toys to Ukraine.

A video shared on social media  by German radio station Hellweg Radio showed a 4x4 vehicle from the county leading the convoy through the streets of Soest in Germany, on the way to the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Following a drive to collect teddies for children in Ukraine, three firefighters from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service began their journey to the Poland-Ukraine border on Tuesday, April 19.

Oxfordshire firefighters Andy Ford, Mark O’Connor and Steve Potter arrived in Germany in the early hours of Friday morning, April 22.

The trio are driving across Europe to deliver the donations as well as fire equipment, which is being gifted to the Ukrainian fire service.

The UK convoy, comprised of more than 60 firefighters in 22 fire engines, joined the charity Fire Aid as part of the second wave of donations being sent to the Poland-Ukraine border. The group will be received by the Polish State Fire Service before their donations are transferred to Ukraine.

On Friday, Mr Ford described the previous day’s drive as a “long day”.

He said: “We travelled around 300 miles with a convoy of 22. We’re now continuing through Germany, but it is slow going with such a large group. We’re hitting about 35-40mph.”
