A Co-op in Oxford will close down, it has been announced.

The Co-op store on Banbury Road in Summertown will close its doors to customers in six months time.

This decision is due to the store not “fitting with the long-term strategy”

The brand has said it will enter into consultation with the 22 staff members who work at the Summertown store.

Where it is possible the company will offer affected staff alternative roles at other sites.

A spokesperson for the brand said: “The Midcounties Co-operative regularly reviews its property footprint to ensure that it is providing the best opportunity to deliver for its members and continue to support the communities in which it operates.

“As a result of this process, the Summertown store was identified as not fitting with the long-term strategy of the Society and the Midcounties Board has therefore made the difficult decision to plan to close the store.

“As a result, we will be entering into consultation with 22 colleagues who work at the Summertown store. Where possible we will offer affected colleague’s alternative roles at sites within the Midcounties family of businesses. We will also work with Post Office Ltd to look for an alternative site for the Post Office currently located within the Summertown store.”

The Summertown store continues to trade as usual at this time but will close in approximately 6 months.
