As Oxford Cheetahs prepare for the return of speedway at Oxford Stadium this week, we look back at some team favourites from over the years who entertained big crowds.

On Wednesday night, Oxford Cheetahs will take on Scunthorpe Scorpions.

Speedway’s return is expected to be followed by greyhound racing in the summer.

It's a long-awaited return for speedway, which was last staged at the Sandy Lane stadium in 2007.

Following years of uncertainty, businessman Kevin Boothby secured a 10-year lease at the Sandy Lane site.

Last year it was announced that former rider Jamie Courtney has been appointed by Mr Boothby as promoter of Oxford Speedway.

Mr Courtney, who raced for Oxford in 2004 and 2005, said at the time: “Firstly, we must thank every person involved in the successful campaign to bring speedway back to Oxford.

“Without their tireless work over the past 14 years and commitment to keeping the Cheetahs name alive, it would be very difficult to be in the position we are now.

“We know what speedway means to people in Oxfordshire and we are determined to make everybody proud and put speedway back on the map.

“We’ve got big plans to make Oxford Speedway a community club where everyone is welcome.
