Oxford was ranked the best city for recycling in the UK but came second to Cambridge in terms of sustainability.
In 2021, nearly 53% of Oxford's waste was reused, recycled or composted with residents recycling over 24,000 tonnes of household waste according to a study by eco-friendly business Clothes2Order.
This exceeded the national average by 6%.
Cambridge followed closely behind Oxford, with a recycling rate of 49%.
In a sustainability ranking of UK cities that included factors such as parks per 100,000 people and air pollution, Cambridge took the lead with 7.6 out of ten to Oxford's 7.35.
Oxford's rival university city ranked better on all categories except EV chargers per 100,000 people, where Oxford had 71.2 and Cambridge had 44.8.
