A judge fixed the sentencing date of a van driver who killed his passenger - after the defendant was convicted of raping a woman in 2019.

Jurors took a day to unanimously find Jordan Wall, 25, guilty of rape after a week-long trial at Oxford Crown Court.

He was said to have assaulted the woman in Carterton in September 2019.

Recorder Michael Roques remanded him in custody to return to court on April 26 for sentence.

Sending the 11-strong jury away, the judge said: “Thank you very much indeed for the very close attention that it is clear to all of us you have paid in this case.

“You’ve been given a very difficult case to try but it is a very important civic duty to give up time for jury service. There are very few civic duties but this really is an extremely important one.”

Earlier this month, Wall pleaded guilty to causing the death of Matthew Hammonds by dangerous driving in Thorney Leys, Witney.

Mr Hammonds, 25, a base maintenance engineer at AirTanker in Carterton, was the passenger in Wall's Ford van when it crashed into metal railings on July 11, 2020.

After taking Wall's guilty plea, the case was adjourned by Judge Nigel Daly until the conclusion of his sexual assault trial.
