A van driver who killed his passenger in a Witney crash was warned to expect a jail sentence.

Matthew Hammonds was a passenger in the Ford van driven by 25-year-old Jordan Wall when it crashed into metal railings in Thorney Leys, Witney, on July 11, 2020.

Mr Hammonds, 25, died in the collision.

Appearing before Oxford Crown Court on Friday morning wearing a grey suit, tattooed Wall, of Hawthorn Road, Eynsham, pleaded guilty to causing the Carterton man's death by dangerous driving.

Carterton man Mr Hammonds was a base maintenance engineer at AirTanker in the town. He moved to Oxfordshire from Doncaster when he was a child as his father was in the RAF.

In the wake of his death, friends of the family raised hundreds of pounds in Mr Hammonds’ memory.

Teaching assistant Emily Shepherd, who organised the fundraiser, said at the time: “Three beautiful children have been left behind so I wanted to fund a memorial bench for them near Cogges or Stanton Harcourt."
