This week the Oxford Mail called for change to make Oxford a safe cycling city.

The deaths of Ellen Moilanen, near Oxford Parkway Station, and Ling Felce, at The Plain roundabout, has brought the topic of road safety to the forefront of public discussion.

We asked our readers on Monday: “What do you think should be done to make cycling safe in Oxford?”

Our readers, who are cyclists, had a lot of thoughts about what can be done improve safety on the roads, as well as changes drivers can make.

Lorraine Grinnell, for example, said “cars should be fined for parking in cycle lanes”.

The importance of available of cycle lanes and infrastructure was also noted by John Gingell Littlejohn.

He said: “Roads should be built with bikes in mind and not the other way round.”

Annie Blackwell wanted to see the quality of the roads improved, she said: “Sort out the potholes!! Every day I have to dodge so many, Cowley road is a nightmare to ride down. Cars push me into the gutter literally but the uneven drains and road is so dodgy to ride on”

Cyclist, and motorist, David Turner urged for “working lights & a bit of respect for other road users”.

Sniper Ward, who drives and rides, called for drivers to be “more aware of the dangers when too close to cyclists”.
