A SERIES of paintings have sold for more than £170,000 at auction.
The first part in a collection of 30 watercolours by the natural history illustrator and painter, Sarah Stone, sold for a total price of £171,500 at Mallams Oxford yesterday morning.
The paintings were from the estate of the late Patrick Dockar-Drysdale, who was a distant relative of Stone.

Some of the works were passed down the family, with others purchased over the years at auction, making it one of the largest collections of her work in private hands.
Works depicted specimens brought to England from expeditions in Australia and the Pacific, including a number of objects collected on Captain Cook’s second and third voyages.
The second part of the collection is to be sold during Mallams’ summer picture sale.
