TRIBUTES have been paid to one of Oxford United’s greatest ever players, after the news of his death was announced this evening.

Joey Beauchamp, the former U’s winger, has died aged 50.

In a statement, the club said: “The thoughts of everyone at Oxford United are with the family and friends of Joey Beauchamp, who has passed way aged 50.”

Beauchamp is currently 10th in the United appearances table with 428 games, and fifth in the all-time Oxford goalscoring chart with 77.

One of his former clubs, West Ham United, tweeted: “The thoughts of everyone at West Ham United are with the family and friends of Joey Beauchamp. Rest in peace, Joey.”

Another of his former sides, Swindon Town, tweeted: “We are heartbroken to learn of the death of former Town player, Joey Beauchamp. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joey's family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Oxford City tweeted: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Joey Beauchamp and everyone connected with Oxford United. RIP Joey.”

Former teammate Ross Weatherstone described Beauchamp as United’s greatest player.

Another former teammate, Jamie Cook, added: “My hero growing up, and a huge honour to play alongside him. RIP Joey.”

Reporter and Oxford United fan, Simon Watts, also described Beauchamp as United’s greatest player.

He said: “The greatest player to ever pull on an Oxford shirt, my absolute hero growing up.

“Misunderstood by anyone who didn’t support us Joey Beauchamp loved OUFC, nothing will ever beat the excitement of Joey picking the ball up running down the wing towards the London Road end.”

beIN sports presenter Nicky Crosby said: “This is really sad news. When I was a young girl Joey Beauchamp would light up The Manor Ground on every visit. He gave fans so much joy. RIP Joey.”
