OXFORDSHIRE County Council passed a motion in December that would see vegan-only food being served at council events and the school's being encouraged to serve a vegan menu 'at least twice a week'.
The motion was tabled by Green Councillor, Ian Middleton, in hope that the council would 'recognise that meat and dairy' is a 'significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and global deforestation'.
The motion is set to go to Cabinet on March 24.
It ask the council to:
- Ensure that food provided at all councilc atered events and meetings is entirely plant-based, preferably using ingredients sourced from local food surplus organisations
- Ensure that Council school meals services have plant-based menus avaliable as part of their regular offer on at least two days per week
- Work on outreach to schools and young people to actively influence and inform on food choices and their impact on the environment, health and animal welfare.
- Encourage and empower students to make informed decisions about the food available in their school.
- Inspire, promote and support initiatives surrounding food growing, preparation and waste avoidance, especially as part of school and community projects.”
