Farmers, and their local supporters, will meet outside Oxfordshire County Hall this morning to protest the county council's decision to serve only vegan food at council meetings and events.

In December, the Lib Dem and Green Alliance run council, passed the motion to help meet green goals.

Not everyone is happy, however - campaigners say the council could meet its green targets by supporting local food producers, and buying locally, rather than switching to veganism.

Conservative Councillor David Bartholomew said after the motion was past late last year that it was 'unacceptable' and that veganism should be a choice.

Mr Bartholomew also said the motion is discriminatory against the farmers who are making efforts to make their farming sustainable.

The Tory councillor had proposed an amendment to the motion at a previous county council meeting, to change the wording to make a plant-based diet optional. However, this amendment was not accepted.

The Oxfordshire Food and Farming rally will begin at 9.30am tomorrow.
