As the former Boswells is demolished, leaving only the shell of the building remaining, we feature photos of the Oxford department store over the decades.

Following closure in 2020, the building on the corner of Cornmarket and Broad Street is now being converted into a hotel called The Store - plans which have been backed by the city council.

The hotel, run by the Reef group, is expected to open in the summer or the autumn of 2023.

It was November 2019 when the Oxford Mail first revealed the news that Boswells, a retail institution in the city for centuries, was to close.

Staff at historic department store Boswells were told that it was 'almost certain' to close in 2020, the Oxford Mail can exclusively reveal.

The store on the corner of Broad Street and Cornmarket Street had been trading since 1738, and was the second oldest family-owned department store in the world.

About 70 employees were called in to a meeting to be given the news that they faced redundancy just weeks before Christmas.

London-based retail property consultants GCW were then hired to advise Boswells regarding the sale of the city centre building.

Boswells board of directors issued the following statement at the time: "The Board has been intensively pursuing all options for preserving the business but due to prevailing adverse retail conditions has concluded that the store is likely to close in 2020.

Two of four directors, Sarah Pearson and Jonathan Pearson, are cousins and descendants of Arthur Pearson - their great-grandfather - who took over the business in 1890.

Mr Pearson told the Oxford Mail in 2019: "This is not a decision we have taken lightly - it is very much a last resort.

"At a briefing in August we told staff that in 2020 we would either be closing or making significant changes which would result in significant redundancies.

"The business is not making money and has not done for a couple of years - you can not go on like that forever and we want to come to an end in a controlled way.

"We want to thank all our staff and all our customers for their support over the years."
