An inquest will be held next summer into the death of a man in Costa Rica.

Rory McLaughlin, 25, of Stroud Close, Banbury, died on November 8 while travelling in the central American nation.

Opening an inquest into his death on Thursday, senior coroner for Oxfordshire Darren Salter said the cause of Mr McLaughlin’s death remained under investigation.

A full inquest will take place on May 10 next year.

Following his death, well-wishers raised more than £25,000 via an online fundraiser to help Mr McLaughlin’s family repatriate his body.

"It has felt like the longest time, waiting for him to come home," his sister Zoe told the Banbury Guardian earlier this month.

"He was the funniest, smartest, kindest person. Family and friends where so important to him and he would drop everything the second you needed him.”

Mr McLaughlin’s family said he had been volunteering on a cacao farm in Costa Rica since the start of September. The trip was part of an ambition to see as much of the world as possible, they said.

The family added that Mr McLaughlin and his siblings suffered from two heart conditions, which were diagnosed after the untimely death of their father.

A funeral is expected to be held today, Friday, December 17, at Banbury Crematorium.
