Readers have been giving their views on a ‘chaotic’ fireworks night in Abingdon where families were kept waiting in queues.

Some of those went along to the event at Dalton Barracks, near Abingdon, on Saturday say there were ‘not enough toilets’, the fireworks didn’t start on time, and the event was ‘well beyond capacity’.

Xplosive Events – who ran the show – say the problems were partly down to ‘film sets on site’ closing two of the entrances.

Bosses said the fireworks were also delayed until ‘the last car had parked up’ but going forward, they are ‘considering’ making events ticket-only with ‘strict’ capacity limits.

LEE BULMAN: “Was an absolute joke - never again.”

RACHEL THOMPSON: “We attended and yes the queues were ridiculous, it took about an hour to get in and an hour and a half to get out. We had to queue for ages for the toilet on arrival but luckily the display was delayed (only by 30 minutes max) so we didn’t miss the beginning.

“If we go next year we will arrive a lot earlier in hope to avoid such delays. I attended the event last year and the queues were minimal so it can definitely be better organised. There wasn’t enough marshals directing people out, cars were zig zagging all over the place because they were getting fed up of waiting but this just added to the chaos. I think it should be mentioned that the display itself was absolutely brilliant though and for us, it made the queues worth it.”

CHARLIE HUDSON: “There were multiple signs saying arrive early and delays will be possible. Two days the crew worked on the display and what a display it was.

"Before the main display there were allot of cars deciding to leave and block the main exit by parking up to watch the display this in turn caused a massive delay as they were not in the safest position and had to be moved on but public being public weren’t going to do what they had been asked.

“Considering the delays the events team did a magnificent job getting the display off the ground for 8.15pm instead of the advertised 7.30/7.40pm. Overall had the advertised warnings and time delays been adhered to by the masses that arrived it would of been a lot smoother.”

SIMON CHURCH: “You cannot compensate for stupid. It was an amazing event.

“We were notified to arrive early the previous day. I got there early and went straight in with no queues.

“There were plenty of open spaces in the audience. We pitched up our camp chairs and blanket. Went for a wander around the fairground. Got some food. Enjoyed the bonfire being lit, had a hot chocolate and marshmallows from the flask we brought, viewed the balloons glowing and took photos, watched the kids show, went back to the fun fair rides and got some churros.

“ The turnaround for toilet queues were up to 10 minutes for us, which is standard for any large event. The main display was easily the best this county has witnessed. Getting out took just under an hour and if the BMW drivers had stayed in their lanes it could have been quicker. Had a great time and by the end we were thunderstruck!”

LISA NEWPORT: “There were plenty of toilets there and the fireworks were only delayed for about 30 minutes not an hour. There were plenty of signs around Abingdon saying to expect delays but agree the organisation could have been better.”

KAYLENE POTTER: “The incredible fireworks and atmosphere were well worth the que. People will find anything they can to moan about!”

ROSSI PARKER: “It was awesome. Credit to the organisers for a great event.”

MATTHEW THOMPSON: “It was fine - you expect to queue at events. The fireworks were amazing.”

SHANE AUSTIN: “We were stuck in the traffic for two hours to get from didcot. But definitely worth the wait.

“Certainly wasn’t the worst. Was actually impressed that they held off the fireworks due to the traffic.”

CYD ATTWOOD: “One of the best displays I’ve ever seen.

“The fireworks were delayed by half an hour due to cars still arriving and they wanted to wait until the last car had parked up! It clearly stated on the tickets arrive early to avoid delays and queues!”

NIKKI AUSTIN: “Took us two hours to get to the event - had no issues while there the fireworks were amazing. The kids were grumpy on the journey but never mind.”
