A QUEEN (not to be confused with The Queen) has visited Oxford.
Her Royal Highness Queen Diambi Kabatusuila from the Democratic Republic of the Congo popped into the Oxford Union on Friday and spoke about slavery, assimilation and her African identity.
The ruler of the Bakwa Luntu people told students: “We look at Africa like it’s a big adventure or a place of chaos, but we need to change that image.
“The challenge today is not how smart we are with cars that drive themselves or drones, the challenge is to renegotiate our contract with nature.
“We have rivers full of plastics, especially on the African continent, and it’s suffocating the life and ecosystems of those rivers.
“When you kill those rivers, it is not only the Congolese who are affected.
“This is why we must call on academia and scientists to help solve these problems.”
Queen Diambi went on a short tour of Oxford, arranged by the Oxford Union, whereby she visited Brasenose College, the Radcliffe Camera and Broad Street.
She follows a series of famous faces to have appeared at Oxford Union over the years, with more recent speakers including Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston and Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat.
