After a new crochet topper appeared in Didcot this week, we set to the task of finding the mystery knitter.

Sitting on a post box in Sandringham Road, the latest creation is an orange and yellow octopus with big wide eyes sitting on a blue knitted base resembling the ocean.

It was later decorated by other mystery knitters who added a variety of fish, a sea turtle, and a pink and blue jellyfish.

After searching the internet, the creator was found.

Wanting to stay anonymous, the mystery knitter simply goes by the letter 'R'.

R is self-thought and created the Sandringham Road Octopus as well as a giant snail at Worcester Drive lamp post.

When asked about the pieces, R said: “I create my pieces to distract people from the negativity in this world, and oh boy is there enough of that! If an individual pauses for a second and smiles, then my goal is met.”

Oxford Mail:

The crocheter believes that fellow knitters create these yarn-bombing pieces because they not only enjoy making them, but it is also a way to continue their craft and spread love to anyone that encounters them.

R said: “This is a gift to anyone who passes, which spreads more love than giving a gift to a single individual.

“A lot of us are disabled and may find it hard to do other tasks or connect with the outside world, but this hobby keeps us busy, useful and connected.”

They have recently just ordered yarn to make a third installation to be found in another mystery location in Didcot.
