PROTESTORS gathered in the city yesterday to call on the Government to house more refugees from Afghanistan.
Oxford Stand Up to Racism met at the Carfax Tower yesterday afternoon to show that Afghan refugees are welcome in Oxford.
The protest paralleled a similar demonstration taking place outside of the Home Office in London, to stop ‘racist deportations’.

Ian Mckendrick, chair of Oxford Stand Up to Racism, said: “People will be aware of the crisis of people trying to get out of Afghanistan at the moment, for their safety and their futures.
“Unfortunately, the British Government has responded by saying they are only going to take a very limited number.
“Our country is one of the ones that is one of the ones that invaded the country and created so much instability, failing to produce what is promised – which was a stable state.”

The campaign group said there was ‘strong support’ from people in Oxford yesterday.
It added that over 100 people signed the national statement launched by the Afghan Human Rights Foundation and Stand Up to Racism, which called for a safe passage for Afghan refugees, and no limits on the numbers allowed to resettle in the UK.
