Thames Valley detectives probing the abandoned Wiltshire police and crime commissioner election in May say they have ‘sought advice’ from the Crown Prosecution Service.

Conservative candidate and Wiltshire councillor Jonathon Seed won the election but was unable to take up the role after it emerged that a 30-year-old conviction for drink driving barred him from the post.

It was subsequently revealed that Cllr Seed, a former British Army major, had also been convicted of failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He was fined £50 and given five penalty points.

The councillor told ITV, which uncovered details of the conviction, in July: “Thames Valley Police have investigated all allegations which include the two historic driving convictions you have referred to and evidence of my declarations regarding these to the Conservative Party. I have fully cooperated with TVP as part of their investigation. Given the investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate for me to make any further comment at this time.”

A second election for the Wiltshire police and crime commissioner role was held yesterday, with the result expected later today.

Last night, Thames Valley Police, which is looking into the circumstances surrounding the May election, said its investigation continued.

A spokesman for the force said: “We can confirm that as part of this process the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service has been sought. The investigation is ongoing and we are not in a position to provide further comment at this time.”

No arrests have been made.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it was unable to comment.
