We have all had a night out where we have spent just a bit too much money on alcohol and felt incredibly guilty the next day.

The bar staff will tell you there is a special 2-4-1 deal on and suddenly your table is filled with four times as many empty glasses as you intended it to be.

But what if there was a single shot the same price as a weekly food shop, a full tank of petrol, or a train ticket from Birmingham to London?

Well, in Oxford such a beverage really does exist.

Located at The Ivy Oxford, Macallan Rare Cask is a single malt whisky which sells for an eye-watering £55 for a 50ml shot.

If you wanted to enjoy this pricey whisky with a mixer then it will set you back £58.50 for a double whisky and coke.

The Ivy’s drinks menu states malt whisky is the ‘original’ whisky of Scotland and is made from ‘malted barley in two, occasionally three, copper pot stills’.

The Macallan, the distillery which created the Rare Cask brand, describes how Rare Cask ‘combines knowledge, skill, passion, commitment and creativity to create a remarkable whisky worthy of its name’.

It adds: “Crafted to showcase complexity and depth, Rare Cask is drawn from the broadest spectrum of casks used in maturation on The Macallan Estate.

"Hand-picked by our whisky making team, the combination of sherry seasoned American and European oak casks - a high proportion of them first fill - deliver an exquisite and unmistakably woody whisky with a rich hue."

This whisky is in good company with other shots on The Ivy’s menu with a Jonnie Walker Blue Label blended scotch whisky for £35, a Ragnaud Sabourin No. 35 Fontvieille cognac for £30 and a Avión Reserva 44 Extra Añejo tequila for £30.

Although Macallan Rare Cask is certainly the most expensive shot on The Ivy’s menu, it is not the most expensive item by far.

Barolo, Vietti, Ravera takes that accolade and is The Ivy’s most expensive bottle of wine at £360 each.

The 2012 bottle of red from Italy is more expensive than most people’s monthly rent or a holiday aboard to some places.

What are you paying for?

According to The Macallan website, the whisky is an ‘experience’ which has a ‘full and warming’ finish to it.

Colour: Mahogany red

Nose: Soft notes of opulent vanilla and raisin pique the nose, giving way to a sweet ensemble of apple, lemon and orange.

Palate: Oak resonates, timeless, polished and rich. Vanilla and chocolate lead the finale along with a light citrus zest.

If a 50ml shot of Macallan Rare Cask tickles your tastebuds then you can buy a bottle on their website for an equally wallet-burning £240.
