Catfishing scams also known as dating scams or romance scams, have seen a huge increase over the course of the pandemic.
A recent study by Techshielder has revealed that Oxfordshire residents have reported the second-highest number of dating scams in the UK.
The UK reported 5,027 cases in 2020, with Oxfordshire (209) only behind London (697) in the total number of scams reported.
Female victims accounted for 57 per cent of the cases in Oxfordshire, while men accounted for 38 per cent.
Fraudsters have not only left many people broken-hearted but also have left their pockets empty, costing each victim over £9,500 on average in Oxfordshire.
The study shows that victims aged 50 to 59 are most likely to fall prey to a catfish, making up 22 per cent of reports.
This is followed by 40 – 49 (19 per cent), 30 – 39 (17 per cent) and then those aged 60 – 69 (14 per cent).
Lasse Walstad, cofounder at Techshielder warned: “In today society, it’s normal to meet and build a relationship online, especially during a pandemic.
“If you are dating over the internet, looking for the one, it’s important to be on your toes.
"There are people out there who will take advantage of those looking for love, thus before you fall for the whirlwind that is love or send any money, look out for any red flags.
“If it’s too good to be true, then it usually is.”
