KIND-HEARTED people have raised thousands of pounds in less than 24 hours for the memorial of a young girl who died in Oxfordshire over the weekend.

The girl had been rescued from Ducklington Lake in Witney on Sunday afternoon after reports had been made of someone struggling in the water.

She was raced to the hospital but passed away a short time later.

An online GoFundMe was set up by the victim's auntie Aimee Kianzad and more than £2,500 have already been donated to pay for a memorial.

In a statement published alongside the fundraiser, Ms Kianzad said: "Sadly, on July 18, this beautiful young girl tragically lost her life in a water accident.

"My brother and his partner are devastated and anything you could donate will help towards setting up a memorial for her.

"Please respect the family's privacy at this time."

Thames Valley Police confirmed that officers attended with both fire and ambulance services.

The girl's family have been informed, and are being closely supported by specially trained officers.

A spokesperson added: "The death is being treated as unexplained and non-suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

"We are very sorry to bring you this tragic news.

"Our thoughts are with the girl’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time."
