TWO more people have died in Oxfordshire after testing positive for Covid-19 in just 24 hours as cases in Oxford are now the highest in the south-east.

The deaths in Oxford and Vale of White Horse take the total number in the county to 730.

Official Government figures show that as of 4pm on Monday, a further 360 new coronavirus cases were registered in the county – the highest number since January 18 – with more than a third of the new cases in Oxford.

The rate of infection in Oxfordshire now stands at 5,500 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 7,609.

Currently, there are six patients with the virus admitted in Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with one patient on ventilation.

The UK has recorded a further 37 Covid-related deaths and 28,773 new cases with 406 patients admitted to hospital, Public Health England confirmed.

Cases identified through a positive lateral flow test – those which can deliver results within half an hour – will no longer be counted if the person then takes a PCR test, which is sent to a lab to be checked, and receives a negative result within three days.
