As we are known worldwide as a nation of animal lovers, I was surprised to hear that the RSPCA does not receive any Government funding.

While governments are all too ready to give hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of public money in aid to some foreign country in their hour of need, I would like to see some of our money given to our own charities, such as the RSPCA, as well. Someone once said dogs are better than kids - they greet you when you come home, show you loads of affection and they don't answer back.

I'm always pleased to see my old boy after a hard day's work as he is to see me, with his tail going 19 to the dozen.

I also understand that St John Ambulance receives no Government funding either.

With health and safety, risk assessments, PC and all the other baloney forced on us today, if it wasn't for St John, many events which involved the public would not be allowed to take place because, without first aid cover, insurance for such events would not be given.

I donate to many home-grown charities as do many others out of choice, but I also, as a taxpayer as everyone else, have to donate, without choice, as a government feels fit.

I would feel happier if some of our money was used to fund home charities such as the RSPCA and St John Ambulance.
