Oxford City Council finances are in a dreadful state, thanks to mismanagement by the Liberal Democrat administration.

This may mean either cuts in services or an above inflation rise in council tax - or both.

I hate to be spreading doom and gloom at this time of year, so I would like to suggest a way your readers can help keep our council tax down.

The recycling of some materials costs the council a lot (though putting it in landfill can cost even more), but two materials are currently very valuable.

They are cans and paper.

Please can we all try to recycle as much paper and as many cans as possible?

This will make money for the council and so help to keep council tax down - as well as being good for the environment.

Happy New Year!
