TRAFFIC was at a standstill around the city centre today after protestors sat in the middle of the road.

Police directed queues of cars from Beaumont Street towards St Giles this afternoon after a woman sat cross-legged in front of the gridlock.

She was pictured by Julia Atkinson holding a sign which says: "I'm terrified for my grandchildren's future because of the climate crisis."

Oxford Mail:

Another man sat in front of the Westgate Centre on Oxpens Road.

He also held a sign which said: "I am terrified that while all politicians lie, billions will die because of climate breakdown."

When questioned said he had chosen the spot because it is 'right in front of the temple of consumption' and was not on a 'public transport route' so would only delay drivers rather than people catching the bus.

However, bus companies tweeted this afternoon to say they had been caught up in the chaos.

Routes were diverted from main roads into the city centre.

In a tweet, Oxford Bus Company said: "[There are] a group of about 70 people marching down Cowley Road towards Bonn Sqaure. Services are staying on the normal route and may be delayed due to the march."
