AN Oxford University student has died of hypothermia while on holiday at a French ski resort.

Jonathan Hard, 21, was in his final year studying philosophy, politics and economics at Keble College, Oxford.

It is understood he died on Monday, after becoming lost while walking back to his chalet at St Sorlin d'Arves, following a party.

Dame Avril Cameron, warden of the college, said: "Everyone in the college is shocked and totally stunned by Jon's death.

"He was an intelligent and friendly student who was hoping to study in the US after obtaining his degree.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends, to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy."

Mr Hard's parents flew out to France today to recover their son's body.

The skiing trip was organised by students at the college and about 100 were on the week-long trip. They were due to return today.

Many of them flew home early as they were so distraught by Mr Hard's death.

Dame Avril said: "We have notified all the students and all the staff. We will be offering support for them when we come back and we have been quite closely in touch with his friends on the ski trip and we will do whatever we can to help as soon as they come back."

The college has also been in close contact with Mr Hard's parents, who live in Leamington Spa, and his older brother.
