A GROUP of about 20 solstice watchers braved the chilly weather to see dawn break on the shortest day of the year.
They gathered at the historic Rollright Stones - set high on a ridge near Chipping Norton.
There was some singing and chanting and a mini-firework display set off by devoted solstice fan Tony, from Northampton.
Husband and wife Rick and Carol Roberts, from Ardley, near Bicester, also rose early yesterday to be there.
Mr Roberts said: "Though not as spectacular as the summer solstice, it was spiritually uplifting and a good way to start Christmas.
"Anyway, Christmas sort of coincides with the winter solstice. The druids were there first!"
Despite the cold, clouds obscured the sun as it rose at 8.09am, but the group was happy to be keeping up an ancient tradition.
