It seems that we will never know who murdered Steven Burton.
Ricky San Juliano has twice been arrested on suspicion of the crime.
The first time he was cleared by a jury. Now Appeal Court judges have ruled that he cannot be charged under the 'double jeopardy' rule.
Mr San Juliano apparently confessed to the crime while in prison for another offence, but the judges ruled that the 'admission' was unsound.
The 'double jeopardy' rule is an excellent one, allowing cases to be reopened where new evidence comes to light.
But much as we feel for Mr Burton's family, that evidence has to be robust.
