Jake Spicer has more reason than most to be downhearted at the way life has treated him.
But despite fighting a rare form of bone cancer for four years, the 13-year-old refuses to give in.
In fact, he has probably been far more energetic than half the teenagers his age.
While they laze at home in front of their computers, he has put his health problems to one side and taken part in a gruelling triathlon to raise money for other unfortunate children.
Leaving behind his walking frame and crutches, he walked around the pitch at the Kassam Stadium before an Oxford United match, cycled a mile and a half, then swam 15 lengths of Blackbird Leys Swimming Pool.
All the money Jake raised will go to the charities Clic, which helps child victims of cancer, and SeeSaw, the Oxfordshire support agency for bereaved children.
His fundraising efforts - and his cheerful outlook on life - have led to him being named a Little Star by Cancer Research UK - a richly deserved award.
What a boy - an example to us all!
