For many years residents in the city would get their gardens looking lovely for the annual Oxford in Bloom competition run by the city council.

Each year there would be an explosion of colour and scent as residents made their gardens look good for the judges.

Among the regular winners was Chris Perks Wood Farm.

In 2012, Mr Perks, then 60, won gold in the best-kept small garden and the best container categories, having also won both sections in 2011.

The veteran Oxford in Bloom competitor said at the time: “Gardening is my passion and I’m very pleased to say that it still looks great now in September.”

Michelle Legg, organiser of the Oxford in Bloom, said that year: “The standard of entries has been very high which made judging a difficult process.
