The magic of pantomime has made a welcome return to Swindon. Last Christmas families were disappointed when the traditional festive offering had to be cancelled because of building works at the Wyvern Theatre. But it has been well worth the wait, as the cast of Cinderella are staging the theatre's best pantomime for a decade - a show of such quality that it could be staged in the West End.
In just over two hours, the energetic cast serve up all the ingredients of pantomime, including some well-choreographed dance routines and comedy capers. From the moment musical director Mark Dickman strikes up the band, young and old alike are captivated with the sets, stunning costumes and the young stars of the future who are part of the chorus.
The fairy tale begins when the glamorous Fairy Godmother, played by international film star Britt Ekland, waves her wand for a magical journey into the world of make believe. Ellie Baker makes a perfect Cinderella and her powerful voice does justice to those big musical numbers.
Also well cast is the multi-talented Simon Aylin, who plays Cinderella's friend Buttons and wrote the pantomime. The incredibly outrageous ugly sisters, Demera (James Dinsmore) and Canderel (Simon Snashall) claim to be the new Sugarbabes, but are definitely not as sweet as they sound. Courtney King (Wicked Stepmother), James Milton (Prince Charming) and Chris Clarkson (Dandini) all give excellent performances.
Cinderella continues at the Wyvern until January 6. Tickets are selling fast, so book now on 01793 524481 before the magic disappears for ever.
