Oxfordshire is full of history, but did you know you could stay the night in an old jail?

From staying in a suburban house with a shark coming out of the roof to a listed windmill, here are five of Oxfordshire’s quirkiest stays.

1. The Summerhouse- Shipton Under Wychwood

This Edwardian Summerhouse overlooks water and rose gardens. It has sumptuous rooms, a sunny terrace for drinks, and charming hosts who will look after you well.

2. The Windmill Blackthorn Hill

This holiday home windmill is a Historical Grade II Listed Windmill with 360-degree views across three counties, once known as the East Mill, and dates all the way back to the seventeenth century.

3. Voco- Oxford Thames- Henley Road, Sandford-on-Thames

Once belonging to the Knights Templar, this historic manor is now a superb four-star hotel set among manicured lawns along the River Thames.

4. Headington Shark- New High Street Headington

The shark at 25ft is certainly hard to miss, as the sculpture sticks out of the roof of a terraced house in New High Street in Headington which is also a holiday home.

5. Malmaison Oxford- City Centre Oxford Castle

Oxford Mail:

Spending a night in a cell sounds far from chic, but somehow Malmaison hotel chain has managed to turn a jail into a comfortable place stay the night. The rooms have chunky, heavy doors with original ‘prison features’ and date back to the 1800s but still has a modern and funky design.
