A NEW fleet of Merlin helicopters flown by 78 Squadron is now based at RAF Benson, near Wallingford.
The new squadron is commanded by Wing Commander Nigel Colman.
Some personnel from the squadron are already serving in Iraq.
The squadron's formation comes just six months after an agreement was signed with the Royal Danish Air Force to transfer six helicopters.
Wing Commander Colman said: "While starting an operational squadron from scratch is a fantastic opportunity, I, and indeed none of the personnel, are under any illusions as to the scale of the challenge ahead.
"From day one 78 Sqn has personnel and aircraft deployed on operations in Iraq.
"Having said this, having a flight deployed from the outset will help us to build a reputation as an operational squadron - while having the flight back in the UK by Christmas will give us the opportunity to begin building a squadron identity and ethos."
Gp Capt Paul Lyall said Forming a second Merlin squadron at RAF Benson has been a real team effort."
The Merlins made a flypast this month to mark their arrival at the base, where improvements have been made to accommodate the new staff.
