Eclectica! bring a whole new meaning to the words string quartet. The Oxford jazz guitar duo of Pete Oxley and Luis D'Agostino have replaced the accustomed second violin and the viola in this project that presents a special Christmas concert at the Holywell Music Room tomorrow.
Completing the quartet are two of the world's finest string players - cellist Bernard Gregor-Smith and violinist Lizzie Ball. Bernard Gregor-Smith is no stranger to the world of the string quartet. He was the founder member of the world-famous Lindsay String Quartet and remained a member for 40 years. He has more than 80 recordings to his credit, many of which are considered classics.
Lizzie Ball's hugely varied career spans both the classical and rock worlds. Since her graduation from Cambridge University in 2002, she has performed chamber music with the Covent Garden Soloists, orchestral work with the Philharmonia, has led the string section for Simply Red's 2005 world tour and last year was 'Gothed up' to play with Meatloaf at the Albert hall. She is the founder member of Classico Latino, a hugely popular piano trio, specialising in the performance of Colombian music.
D'Agostino and Oxley are well-known on the Oxford music scene and have performed to sell-out audiences at the Holywell Music Room. They are also touring nationally as a duo in preparation for their third CD release on 33 Records. Oxley also runs Oxford's very successful jazz club, The Spin.
Eclectica! will be delivering a seasonal concert that will include one or two choice carol arrangements, plus Eastern European folk music, tangos from Argentina, frevos from Brazil, and contemporary works and standards from North America.
The concert is at 8pm and tickets cost £12 (£9 concessions) from 01865 305305 or on line from www.ticketsoxford.com. You can also book via the Spin jazz club on 01865 741909.
