A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a group of teenagers attacked a delivery driver in Wantage as they stole items from his van.

Thames Valley Police said officers were called between 6.20pm and 6.40pm on Monday, December 7, to the incident on Wallingford Street.

The delivery driver, a 39-year-old man, who was with another man, managed to retrieve the items however one had been dropped and damaged.

The group became abusive and one boy spat at the delivery van and in the direction of the driver, who told him to leave before getting in the van.

The boy then stood in front of the vehicles stopping the driver from leaving.

He then got out of the van and approached the boy, who hit him on the side of the head.

Police said the delivery driver placed the boy in a headlock to restrain him but was worried about hurting him so let go of him and told him to go away.

Once released the boy hit the man on the head again and the pair grappled on the ground before the man who was with the driver separated them.

The 39-year-old was not injured during the incident.

An appeal by police described it as a 'distressing incident for the victims who were spoken to with racist language throughout'. 

It added the force would 'not tolerate this kind of behaviour'.

A 15-year-old boy from Wantage was arrested on December 7 on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and was released under investigation.
