TWO more controlled parking zones will be coming to Oxford, this time in central Cowley.

The two new zones were signed off on Thursday at a council meeting, by Yvonne Constance, cabinet member for transport.

This will mean that residents who own cars in most of the streets in Cowley will have to buy a permit allowing them to park on the street outside their homes.

The Central Cowley West Zone will cover Crowell Road, Bartholomew Road and adjoining streets.

The Central Cowley East Zone will cover Barns Road, Boswell Road, Bailey Road, Phipps road and other nearby streets.

In both zones, only permit holders will be able to park along the roadside between 8am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Residents who own cars and want to park on their streets usually have to pay £65 for an annual parking permit in other parts of the city where CPZs already exists.

Extra business-class permits will be given out to teaching staff at Church Cowley St James Primary School.

Some changes were also made to parking restrictions around the entrance to Lewin Close, a private road.

Marko Jung spoke on behalf of Lewin Close residents to request the changes.

There were also concerns about how the parking zones would marry up with plans for Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in Cowley.

A letter from a member of the public called Peter Blackburn, who described himself as a ‘council tax payer’ was read out in the meeting.

Mr Blackburn described the traffic calming measures of the Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and the CPZs as a 'money cow for the council' in his objection.

Ms Constance said the new zones were part of a 'city wide' programme to clamp down on commuter parking.
