All crews left the scene by 7pm, nearly two hours later.

Now firefighters have thanked those stuck in gridlock for their 'patience'.

Watch manager Mark Keely said: "Thames Valley Police attended to assist with the road closure and investigation of the incident.

"Thank you for your patience to everyone who was caught up in the traffic as a result.

"Your patience allowed us to keep the scene safe for ourselves and other emergency services responders. Please be careful when driving in winter weather, it has been very foggy recently and the visibility and driving conditions are poor”.

Firefighters have advised what to do when it is foggy:

  • Allow extra time for jounrey
  • Check lights
  • Switch on dipped headlights
  • Use fog lights if visibility is reduced to 100m or less
  • Don't hang on to back lights of the car in front as you will be too close to brake safely
  • Watch our for fog because it can be patchy and often drifts
  • Fog makes roads slippery and wet
