A HOUSE became full of smoke after a Christmas candle set fire to a tablecloth.

Residents made the grim discovery when they were woken up by the smoke alarm last night.

They evacuated the property, which is in Marsh Baldon, and phoned 999.

Crews from Rewley Road and Slade Road stations were first at the scene.

The teams put on breathing equipment to go inside and soon confirmed that there was ‘no significant fire’.

They searched the house to find the cause of the smoke logging and discovered the left-over mess from the burnt Christmas candle that was put in a wreath.

The residents said they had snuffed the candle before bed but investigators said there was enough residual heat to set alight to the wreath and then the tablecloth, which set off the alarm.

Now firefighters have warned: “We would like to remind you all of the importance of using an appropriate heat-resistant holder for candles, ensuring they are properly extinguished and cool before leaving them unattended and the importance of having a smoke alarm.”
