ALDI wants to open a new store in Abingdon and has identified a potential site.

The supermarket giant has identified a site on Wootton Road as a potential area to build a new store.

Today, Aldi will be launching a public consultation to identify whether there is an 'appetite for a new store' in this location.

The location of the site is west of Wootton Road and east of the A34.

Aldi has said a new store at this location 'would complement and integrate into the residential development'.

It also said the site is already 'earmarked for development'. 

The company added the new store would offer several benefits to the local community.

These include offering an 'improved shopping choice, high-quality products, and value for money for the residents in north Abingdon and the villages nearby'.

It also added that the new store would 'reduce the need for residents to travel' by ensuring the area has a 'good choice of supermarket provision for its existing and future needs'.

The public will be informed of the consultation through the delivery of a community newsletter that explains what a new store would offer.

Lee McCandless, Property Director for Aldi said: “We have worked hard to prepare the proposals for the site and look forward to hearing the views of the local community prior to submitting an application to Vale of White Horse District Council.

“Our proposals represent an opportunity to build a new discount community food store, improving local shopping choice for residents in Abingdon.

“The proposed store is within walking distance from homes in the area and would discourage driving to nearby towns for shopping. Electric charging points and cycle spaces will also be included to further encourage sustainable travel.

“The new store would also create a range of permanent employment opportunities for local residents, all of which would be paid well above the National Living Wage.”
