A winter chill will see temperatures reach just two degrees.
Met Office weather forecasters say the cold snap will start in the northern half of the UK before spreading southwards.
Frosts, hail and sleet, are expected particularly from mid-week onwards, but at lower levels and further south, any snow is expected to be more transient in nature.
BBC Weather also forecasts snow showers in Banbury on Saturday.
