AN OXFORDSHIRE MP is fighting to get bathing water status for a river stretch to stop Thames Water discharging raw sewage into it.
Layla Moran, Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, tabled a Commons motion demanding the Government make a 'no-brainer' decision to grant the River Thames in Oxford Bathing Water status.
The measure would mean the river would be subjected to a strict testing regime based around public health requirements.
In the motion, Ms Moran criticised water companies for polluting rivers with sewage, which is against the 'duty to their customers' and the Government inaction that allowed it to happen.

This comes after Oxford City Council passed a cross-party motion calling for an area of the River Thames to receive the protection.
The MP commented: "The Government must, working with Thames Water, ensure that our rivers are clean, so Oxford residents can swim and use our waterways safely.
"Sewage companies have a duty to their customers and filling rivers with sewage is endangering them.
"I hope that the Government sees sense and grants the River Thames Bathing Water Status.
"It is a no-brainer."
